The Fugard Bioscope’s fortnight screening of Moffie
Eric Abraham and The Fugard Bioscope present a fortnight of screenings of Moffie, the new film from Portobello Productions and Penzance Films, directed by Oliver Hermanus, from 15 – 29 March 2020 at Cape Town’s Fugard Theatre.
Moffie is based on the memoir of the same name by Andre Carl van der Merwe, produced by Eric Abraham and Jack Sidey, co-produced by Theresa Ryan-Van Graan and stars Kai-Luke Brummer, Ryan De Villiers, Matthew Vey, Stefan Vermaak and Hilton Pelser.
The year is 1981 and South Africa’s white minority government is embroiled in a conflict on the southern Angolan border. Like all white boys over the age of 16, Nicholas Van der Swart must complete two years of compulsory military service to defend the Apartheid regime. The threat of communism and “die swart gevaar” (the black danger) is at an all-time high. But that’s not the only danger Nicholas faces. He must survive the brutality of the army – something that becomes even more difficult when a connection is sparked between him and a fellow recruit.
Moffie is the winner of The Mermaid Award (best LGBTQI-themed film) at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, and nominated for the Orizzonti Prize and the Queer Lion Award at the Venice International Film Festival, the best feature film at the London Film Festival, Best Director (Oliver Hermanus), Breakthrough Producer (Jack Sidey) and Best Cinematography (Jamie D Ramsay) at the British Independent Film Awards and for the Screen International Critics Choice at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) and has been hailed by critics.
The Fugard Bioscope brings audiences the chance to watch recorded live performances from the world’s best opera, theatre and ballet companies to be enjoyed from the comfort of a Fugard Theatre seat. Screenings are presented on The Fugard Theatre’s full size high definition cinema screen with a 7.1 dolby digital surround sound system.
Moffie will be screened at the Fugard Theatre from 15 – 29 March from Tuesday to Sunday at 3pm, 7pm and 9pm. Tickets cost R110 and can be booked directly through the Fugard Theatre box office on 021 461 4554 at or online at www.thefugard.com. There is a 20% discount for Friends of the Fugard. “Moffie is measured, remorseless; it crawls right under your skin.” – The Guardian
“Moffie achieves some hard grace in under two hours: Never has the titular slur borne such beauty.” – Variety
“With this gut-punch of a film and 2011’s Skoonheid (Beauty) which explored the self-loathing psyche of a South African businessman dangerously obsessed with his daughter’s boyfriend, Hermanus has given us two thrillingly cinematic films digging deep into his nations’ deep-seated anger, repression and self-loathing.” – BFI
