It’s Only A Play

  • Suspended until further notice

A celebration of theatre at its best … and theatre people behaving their not-so-best.

Please note: Following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address on Sunday 15 March, we have decided to suspend operations at The Fugard Theatre with immediate effect, as of Monday 16 March 2020, until further notice due to the acceleration of the COVID-19 virus over the weekend. The health and well-being of our audiences, actors and The Fugard staff remain our foremost concern. All patrons will be contacted by The Fugard Theatre box office to arrange a full refund for seats booked. For any enquiries, please email [email protected]. Details around new dates and rescheduling of our suspended productions will be communicated through our website, social media and database in due course.

Sometimes the show can’t go on: If you have tickets to a live performance or screening which has been cancelled due to COVID-19, please consider donating your ticket rather than requesting a refund. This is the kind of thing that can kill the arts. The livelihood of countless performing arts professionals are at stake.” Lamees Albertus, General Manager & Producer of The Fugard Theatre.

It’s opening night of Peter Austin’s new play The Golden Egg, and he’s anxiously waiting to see if his show is a hit. With his career on the line, he shares his big First Night with his “best” friend, a television star, his novice producer, his doped-up diva, his genius director, a lethal drama critic and a fresh-off-the-bus coat check attendant on his first night in Manhattan.

It’s Only A Play, written by four-time Tony winner Terrence McNally, is a celebration of theatre at its best … and theatre people behaving their not-so-best.

It’s alternately raucous, ridiculous and tender – and proves that sometimes the biggest laughs happen offstage.

“Hilarious! The hottest ticket in town – and rightly so.” The Wall Street Journal

“Terrence McNally’s ‘It’s Only A Play’ is that rare comedy that’s as smart as it is funny.” Newsday
