Come for a drink at the Fugard
We’re rather proud of our cosy ground-floor bar, which opens two hours before all scheduled show times and stays open until last rounds are called… often as late as 1am. And if the weather is fine we open the bar on our fantastic rooftop terrace, with its panoramic views of the city.
Both bars offer a range of wines from some of the Cape’s top estates, but we also think you’ll enjoy our house wine – in red and white – created especially for the Fugard by award-winning Stellenbosch winery DeMorgenzon. Alongside the wine we stock craft beer from local brewery CBC, on tap.
During the show we offer a range of light meals and tradtional snacks. Our La Ciambali coffee machine turns out some of the best flat whites in the city. In fact, our coffee bar is also open from 6.30am – 11am Monday to Friday.
Want to grab a bite to eat before joining us for a drink? Here are a few of our favourite restaurants close to The Fugard…
Just a few steps from our front door, Dias is one of the most popular taverns in Cape Town. With plastic tablecloths and a bandstand in the corner it’s certainly not fine dining, but the warm welcome and generous portions of well-priced Portuguese fare make this our favourite laid-back local eatery. The trinchado steak cooked in red wine and garlic is particularly good.

This historic watering hole dates back to 1808, and still offers plenty of old-world charm. Well-priced ‘pub grub’ dominates the menu, and ‘The Percy’ is famous for its enormous portions of eisbein and pork ribs. The tavern is just a short drive (or a five-minute stroll) from the theatre, allowing plenty of time for a drink in our bar before the show.
Diva Caffé Ristorante
This crowd-pleaser has moved from Observatory to the East City and is a great option for a pre-show pizza or pasta. It’s an unpretentious spot with rustic charm, and the food is reliably good. There’s a fair selection of pastas and salad, but the house speciality is the thin-base pizza: there are over 20 options on offer, with gluten-free bases available for a small surcharge.
Present your ticket at Diva, the same day as attending the Fugard Theatre, and receive a free glass of housewine or soft drink when you order a main course.
This delightful Greek eatery is worth the drive to Dunkley Square, just five minutes from the theatre. Tables spill from the whitewashed interior out onto the pavements of the tree-lined square, and the menu offers a mouth-watering meander across the Mediterranean. Platters of meze and filled pita breads are ideal for a light dinner, but there are also hearty mains of moussaka, fish and slow-roasted lamb. And, of course, Greek pastries for dessert are a must.
